Email Marketing Ethics Group--Permission Based
|
Email marketing has two camps. One camp follows the CAN SPAM laws and uses permission based lists (PBL). The other camp scrapes email addresses, buys, sells, and shares lists. We are those who practice PBL and follow CAN SPAM laws. PBL does NOT mean merely offering an opt out link. It means the email address is not added to a list unless the recipient agrees to receive marketing before hand. Deliverability is dwindling because of the blacklist AOL, MSN, Hotmail and others maintain. Constant Contact reports that AOL considers only one SPAM report in 1,000 to land on the blacklist. Most SPAM reports are erroneous and these mega companies do NOT research the legitimacy of a SPAM report before adding a sender to the blacklist. Many email software programs make it easy to accidentally report a sender as a SPAMer. This needs to change. We are based in Colorado, but will serve a national cause. "Do not SPAM" legislation is being introduced in Colorado early 2008. Through clear expectations and communication with ISPs and the public, we hope to change these inequities and free ethical email marketers from the blacklists. All ethical email marketers are welcome.
